Last Thursday, I went to a small business event after work. I arrived early and stood near the coffee table. A woman next to me worked for a company I knew. I introduced myself and told her I was a project manager at a design company. I explained that I helped our team plan projects and finish them on time. I also mentioned a recent project for a local hotel. She was interested because her company was planning something similar. We talked for a few minutes about our work and the people in our teams. Before I left, we exchanged contact details. The next morning, I sent her a short email. I said it was nice to meet her and included a link to the hotel project.

Alex arrives at a local networking event with one clear aim: to meet people who work in project teams. Alex wants to move from customer support into project support, but does not start conversations by asking for a job.
During a coffee break, Alex meets Sam, a project manager. Alex gives a short introduction: name, current role and one useful detail about the work. Then Alex asks Sam a question and listens to the answer. When Sam mentions online services, Alex explains a connection with the current job: working with customer feedback and the product team.
Before leaving, Alex asks to connect on LinkedIn. That evening, Alex sends a short message mentioning the event and their conversation.
You do not need to tell your whole career story when you meet someone. Share enough to start a conversation. Ask a question, find a connection and suggest a simple way to stay in touch.
Falar
