B1 · Gerund vs infinitive

Ouvir

Vais ouvir uma mulher a explicar os seus gostos num primeiro encontro com uma vizinha.

I'm really into gardening at the moment. I started during the pandemic, and now I spend most weekends on my balcony with my plants. I'm also quite keen on old films, especially black and white ones. What I can't stand is loud music in restaurants. I like talking when I eat, and I don't enjoy shouting across the table. I'm not a big fan of sport either, although I do enjoy watching tennis. My neighbour laughed and said, "Then we're going to get on very well." It turned out she grows tomatoes.

Ler

More than "I like" "I like" is useful, but English has many ways to talk about preferences. Strong positive: "I love…", "I'm really into…", "I'm a big fan of…" Medium: "I quite like…", "I don't mind…" (não me importo) Negative: "I'm not keen on…", "I'm not a big fan of…" Strong negative: "I can't stand…", "I hate…" After most of these, use the -ing form: "I can't stand waiting", "I'm into running". A tip: "I don't mind" is very useful when you want to be polite and flexible.

Falar

Imagine you are meeting a new neighbour. Speak for 30–60 seconds about what you are into at the moment and what you can't stand, giving a reason for each.

Escrever

Write 4–5 sentences introducing your hobbies and preferences to a new friend, using at least three different expressions.
