Last week, I went to the local council office to register my new address. I had booked an appointment online, but I wasn't sure which documents to bring. The website mentioned a passport and proof of address, so I took my rental contract too. When I arrived, I got a ticket and waited for my number to appear on the screen. The woman at the desk checked my documents and gave me a short form. I filled in my name, address and phone number. I left one section empty because I didn't understand it. She explained it, and I finished the form. The whole appointment took about twenty minutes. Before I left, she gave me a reference number. My registration certificate should arrive by post next week.

Before my appointment, I checked the registration office’s website. It listed the documents I needed, but I missed the information about copies. I brought my passport and rental contract, but I didn’t bring a copy of the contract.
Luckily, there was a photocopier downstairs. I made a copy, completed the form and went back to the same desk. The whole visit took about forty minutes.
The clerk gave me a confirmation letter. She said my registration number would arrive by post within two weeks. I’ve kept the letter with my other important documents. I’ve also saved a photo of it on my phone.
I haven’t received my number yet, so I can’t finish setting up my online account. For now, I check my post every day. Next time I visit an office, I’ll check whether I need originals, copies or both. That small detail can save a second trip.
Falar
A funcionária olha e diz: “Ah — this one has to be translated.”
Ela sugere marcares nova data.

- I would like to register as a resident. What documents do I need?
- Could you explain what this section of the form means?
- How long does the process usually take?
