Ouvir

Vais ouvir uma mulher a falar da família num jantar com colegas estrangeiros.

People always ask me about my family, so here's the short version. I'm the middle child, which explains a lot. My older brother lives in Canada with his wife and their twins, so we mostly see each other on video calls. My younger sister lives ten minutes away from me, and we talk almost every day. My parents are retired and they spend half the year in the Algarve. I'm married, and my partner has a huge family, so at Christmas there are about thirty of us around the table. It's chaotic, but I love it. Families are a great topic, by the way. Everyone has a story, and everyone has an opinion about theirs.

How to talk about your family in English When people ask about your family, they usually want a short, friendly answer, not a family tree. Start with the shape: "I come from a big family" or "It's just me and my mum." Then add two or three people: "I've got an older sister who lives in Porto" or "My dad is retired now." Use possessives clearly: "my brother's wife" (a cunhada), "our kids", "their house". Finally, add a feeling or a detail: "We're very close" or "We don't see each other very often, but we talk a lot." That last sentence is often the one people remember.

Falar

Imagine a colleague asks you about your family over lunch. Speak for 30–60 seconds: describe the shape of your family, two or three people, and how close you are.

Escrever

Write 4–5 sentences replying to a friend who asked about your family: describe who they are, where they live and how often you see them.
