Buying time without sounding lost Every fluent speaker buys time. The trick is to do it with confidence, not with "um" and "er". Here are five phrases professionals use: "That's a great question — let me think for a second." "I've never been asked that before, but…" "Well, the first thing that comes to mind is…" "That's something I've actually been thinking about recently." "Just to make sure I understand — you're asking about…?" Notice what they do: they fill the silence with words that sound calm and in control, while your brain works in the background. One warning: use one phrase, not three. "That's a great question, wow, let me think, well, um…" sounds nervous. One phrase, one pause, then your answer.

Falar

Pratica a sequência completa: frase para ganhar tempo + pausa + resposta com duas ideias. Responde em voz alta a estas perguntas: 1. What would your colleagues say about you? 2. Tell me about a mistake you made at work. 3. Why should we choose you and not another candidate? Usa uma frase diferente em cada resposta: "Let me think for a second…", "I've never been asked that before, but…", "The first thing that comes to mind is…" Grava-te se puderes e ouve: a pausa soa calma ou nervosa?

Escrever

Escreve respostas a duas destas perguntas: 1. What are your strengths? 2. Why did you leave your last job? 3. What do you know about our company? Em cada resposta, começa com uma frase para ganhar tempo e organiza a resposta em duas ou três ideias claras. No final, sublinha a frase que usaste para ganhar tempo.

Prática

Responde em voz alta:

  1. What do you say before a difficult answer to win a few seconds?
  2. How long is a normal pause before answering?
  3. Why is a calm pause better than a fast answer?
